Deaf Awareness and Sign Language (Legal) Workshop” – Deaf Classroom HK

Students designing the “Flip Courtroom” community legal education project were invited to participate in the “Deaf Awareness and Sign Language (Legal) Workshop” co-organized by Deaf Classroom HK, and Hong Kong Schools Mooting and Mock Trial Association (HKSMMTA) on 19 March. The workshop aims to deepen their understanding of the challenges faced by the deaf community when engaging with the Hong Kong legal system.

During the workshop, students have a try at learning the basic common sign languages that are used in legal settings, experiencing some of the inherent limitations of these sign languages in explaining complex legal scenarios. Moreover, students had the chance to interact with a deaf sign language instructor, a case worker and a barrister who has represented deaf people before. Through this process, students reflected on whether the HK legal system can safeguard the right to a fair trial for the deaf community.

A shout-out to Deaf Classroom HK and HKSMMTA for delivering such an inspiring workshop! Stay tuned to find out more about our “Flip Courtroom” Street Law simulation workshops.
